My brother has written a book but it is out of print…”With God in a POW Camp” by Ralph Gaither. Yes, he did go through some really bad stuff..from 172 lbs to 90 lbs…the first 14 months spent in solitary darkness…so early in war–really didn’t know what to expect…family didn’t know if he was alive for 4 1/2 yrs. Yes, was very bad time in family history. He is now battling Parkinson’s disease. My dad was a good example of WWII aftermath–he would drink and talk about the time he came up to deck of ship (LCI) and watched as a Japanese plane dove into the ship right next to his…he said he just turned around and went back down and didn’t come back-up!! He would talk about little children swimming out to the ship to dive for food being thrown overboard. By the way, my brother has many awards–all for security–we still don’t know what they were for!!! I guess all families have many stories to share when we stop to think about them!!! Mine sure has much to share!!! Sorta’ like that program on BYU channel…..later!
No doubt that you’ve got a family full of American heroes, Linda. Kinda ironic that none of your brother’s decorations are public. My hat’s off to you and yours.
So nice getting your reply…haven’t talked with Carol but will try to reach her this weekend as I am leaving Layton, Ut. in a week or so to return to Fl…so want to see/speak with her….will stay in touch via your websites….My brother was a Navy pilot, F4B Phantom on the USS Independence…shot down Oct. 17, 1965 and lucky to come home Feb. 13, 1973! He stayed in Navy and retired after 23 yrs. total. His son-in-law, a Naval Academy grad. is now 2nd in command of a Nuclear Submarine….Guess we are Navy people as my father was in Navy, Pacific including OkaNawa and IwoJima during WWII. Later….
Wow, Linda! Your brother has quite a tale. 8 years in a POW camp had to have been some tough duty. And including the son-in-law and your father, that’s an impressive family tradition of service.
old friend of Carol’s from hygiene school and church….remember her knowledge of our beloved Chinese food…..anxious to see her again. Would like to know more about China’s Wings………..
Thanks for checking in, Linda! Carol has been really helpful to me through the years. I’ve got lots of China’s Wings info on the site, probably best begun here, on the China’s Wings page, and here, at the interesting points of entry to the China’s Wings category. You may also enjoy using the search the site box to the right and searching for “chuck Sharp”. Cheers, Greg
