Eilene, I graduated from notecards while researching The Bonanza King. I now use the organizing program Evernote to manage my research. Same organizational system in a number of ways, but with very powerful digital search functions and tagging options within the program. It’s a huge help. Digital organizing takes some getting used to, but I couldn’t recommend Evernote more strongly.

I have been working on this book for several years (now in 2nd draft), but I have collected so much research – much of it unexamined – and am struggling with ways to keep it at hand for when I need it. I’ve tried note cards with a little success, but a book’s worth of research is just daunting!

Glad you found it, Anna. Even more pleased you find it helpful.

I’ve written another NF book since I wrote this post (The Bonanza King), so I’ve got even better at using Evernote and at keeping myself digitally organized. Which is crucial.

Feel free to reach out if there’s anything else I can help with.

And good luck with your project!

I just got started on a non-fiction book and this outline is super, super helpful. Was so surprised I didn’t see any comments on this post that I had to add one ;) thanks again!
